Howdy! I’ve always owned Hondas, but a few months back, I bought a 2020 Kia Forte brand new. I got a good deal on it, and I know several people who have had good luck with Hyundai/Kia vehicles. The 10 year/100,000 mile powertrain warranty was also intriguing. My question is the overall reliability of the Hyundai/Kia Nu 2.0 MPI engine as well as the CVT transmission. Have you seen any inherent problems/issues in these engines and transmissions? What can I do to ensure the power train lasts as long as possible? I’ve seen Kia recall vehicles for engine issues and it’s made me somewhat paranoid. 6,000 miles so far and no issues.
Hyundai and Kia are both known for making weak engines and transmissions. Personally I would never buy one no matter how good the deal was. If you want to make it last as long as possible then baby it.
Hyundai makes bad engines. Thats it. But, in the old days of 08 09 model years, they had very simple engines and my family car is a 09 Kia Sportage very very reliable. The newer ones usually are GDi but the MPi Nu series is a bit more reliable, depending on the model and year. Scotty has a video on the 2017 Kia Forte go watch it.
Hyundai/Kia do not make reliable vehicles. If you enjoy dealership service department coffee and don't value your time or money, go ahead. But you will be spending a lot of time in the service department.
The 10yr/100k on the power train does not mean it's totally free. You still have pay the labor to have all the stuff removed to service the engine and transmission. There are incidentals like fluids and hoses that you still have to pay for. You want bumper to bumper then you will pay extra. I paid the dealer an extra 2 grand for 10yr/100k and it was well worth it. I am on my third Hyundai / Kia and they have served me well. If you don't beat on them and keep up with the maintenance you will get up to 200K in my experience.
