I Got Cold Feet

Scotty, I have a 2004 Honda Civic (automatic transmission) with 160,000 miles. It runs like a clock and I love it. After several years of driving a 2004 Volkswagen GTI (which I also loved), and more recently watching your videos, I'll have my eyes pealed for a nice used Civic Si sometime down the road. In the meantime, my Civic blows cold air on my feet at idle speeds. Once it gets good and warm (in other words, by the time I get to my destination), it CAN blow nice and hot - from every orifice, mind you. I've heard everything from cracked reservoir bottle, to bad water pump, to "that's just the way the Civics are". It does seem to accept coolant whenever I check but it does not overheat in the summer time. While it's cold in Indiana right now, I haven't done much to diagnose it. Please don't tell me it's a blown head gasket.

Have you changed the thermostat? It might be stuck open and it takes longer for the engine to warm up.

I agree with yaser, on a Civic, you should get heat within 5 miles or less. It's not unusual for a thermostat to fail at that kind of mileage and it's not that hard/expensive a fix. Do you have a temp gauge on your dash?

Hmmmmm...I feel like I did that. I'll have to check my records. This is only my second winter with it. Odd thing is that the defrost blows warm and the upper vent's blow warm while the foot air is cold. And it's only cold down there at idle (after it's warmed up). I wondered if it was the water pump. It seems like it's blowing air at my feet through an entirely different heat exchanger.

So probably the blend door actuator of the vent is bad. Try to whack it to make it work.

I bought the thermostat but haven't changed it out yet. Would't you know it ... it was 57 degrees outside today. {black}
