I have a 1999 tahoe 4 door 4x4 LT with 179,000 miles on it.As far as i know i am the second owner, origional power plant and drivetrain. When i drive fast say 2500rpm and up it triggers the SERVICE 4X4 LIGHT.There is also the sound of a ratcheting rollercoaster when I step on it from a stop or below 20mph.It also does this going up steep hills.I think this is one of the ujoints going bad. Also what fluid should i use in my tcase? I heard that oem was Dex/Merc2 but also heard that with a flush,it can be changed to Autotrak2 like the 1999 silverado(round body) came with from the factory.
have a diagnostic scan run on the vehicle to find the cause for the trouble light. tcase fluid should be specified in the owner's manual.
Is this something that any shop can do? I understand the transfer case module is separate from the main computer, and not all scanners do this.Id like to avoid places that specialize in chevy because of the likelyhood of them trying to upsell me stuff. Not to mention dealerships overcharge
if it's a half-decent shop, they should have scanner that can do it. Shops that specialize in your particular vehicle would be a good thing for you.
I was sick with the factory floor but realize if it's making noise odds are they at the 4x4 especially the transfer case is starting to wear those things only have a limited lifespan
Thanks Scotty. So should I plan on a rebuild if the case is reusable,or am I best off buying a new one?
