I just bought a used Lexus. Is there a way to tell if the previous owner used Synthetic vs. Regular?

2005 Lexus ES330 (made in japan)

Mileage: 200,000 and change

Seems to have been well cared for.

You always advise not to switch between synthetic and regular oil. Is there a way to find out which the previous owner used?

Thanks,

Mad Brad

You would need to send a sample of the oil to a lab for testing.  Check with Hertz or Avis to see who they use.  They check the oil in their rental cars frequently.  When the lab reports a certain amount of metal particles in the oil, they sell the cars to unsuspecting consumers.

No, you can't.

If the engine runs well, doesn't leak, doesn't burn oil then I wouldn't worry about it
