I’m thinking of getting a new Jeep Wrangler. I’ve heard you say they’re not so reliable, what problems have they had?
Wranglers seem to be a "fling" vehicle from what I observe. People love the uniqueness then after 3-4 years of rough riding, noise and cold driver cabin they trade for something else. What I would do is lease one for 3 years and enjoy while its under full warranty. They are cool, but it seems to wear off if your just an average car owner and not a hard core off roader rock crawler.
I’ve had three Wranglers, a 1992 YJ, a 2017 2 door Willys Wheeler (that I g ave to my daughter) and 2017 Rubicon 2 door. I do occasional off roading, sometimes a bit difficult (aka “dumb”) without any unusual problems. That said, I only put about 5k miles a year on any of my Jeep’s and make sure regular maintenance is performed on schedule. Properly maintained I don’t think you will have any surprises. That said, they are rough riding, noisy and I get 14-15 MPG in town and 18-19 MPG on the highway. Without the roof rack I used to get 19-20 on the highway. The Willys would push 21 MPG. I’m sure the mileage and noise would improve if I weren’t wearing mud tires, but then I’d get stuck and that wouldn’t be fun.
Do not get the newer ones. Get an older one that will actually last. Scotty has said repeatedly what bad cars the new ones are.
