I want to buy a 2014 Subaru BRZ I was wondering if they are a good car? I know they usually require a lot of maintenance but Ill be up to doing it. Also, I plan on getting the 6 speed standard trans and doing some mods such as custom cooling and things like that if I get it. I was just wondering if they are good cars and around how long do they last (mileage) with good maintenance?
They tend to be purchased by young fools imbeciles people who beat the tar out of them. That one may well have been beaten to death over the last 8 years. Be sure a good mechanic goes over the thing carefully.
Ok thanks, yeah I planned on having a mechanic look at it anyways.
They are good cars and fun to drive with the manual transmission. Just make sure your mechanic checks it before purchase.
Thanks planned on doing that anyways
@chucktobias has a good point about the previous owner...
In general, yes, they are pretty reliable. That nonturbo engine that all the “journalists” complained about in 2014 means that the drivetrain has suffered less stress in the 8 years since. Even more so if you get a stick shift, which I believe the majority are.
Another nice thing about the BRZ/FRS/86 is that it is tres easy to work on yourself. If something is worn or broken, parts are usually cheap.
The biggest downside to an aging Subaru* is that they use a lot of cheap hardware. (A Lexus it ain’t). All the little nuts and bolts are thinner than they should be and will start to fail. Nothing major, just annoying. So, for example, I would get a wheel stud installation tool (they’re about $10) and learn how to use it.
Also, if the spark plugs haven’t been replaced, you’ll need to do that soon. It’s DIY but a bit tedious.
* Ignore the inevitable “head gasket” comments. The Subaru FA20 motor has no more head gasket problems than any non-Subaru motor.
Yes they can be just make sure to have a mechanic check it over well.
Also hopefully the previous owner did proper maintenance
