Is an older Nissan Pathfinder a good vehicle?

Hey Scotty,

Big fan of your videos, I watch them every day and have learned a lot from you. My 2001 Chevy Suburban finally gave up the ghost with almost 496,000 miles on the original engine and transmission and I am in the market for another vehicle. I know GM has been crap for years now and I won't be buying another one. I would also like to get more than 13 miles per gallon on the highway!

My family has always had Ford vehicles and typically have been able to keep them on the road for close to 300,000 miles. I was originally looking at 2009-2012 Ford Escapes. Winters are pretty bad where I live in Pennsylvania, so I've always had an SUV and would like to stick with one.

The dealer we usually work with has a 4WD 2006 Nissan Pathfinder SE with 169,000 miles on it for about $5,600. They also have a 4WD 2011 Ford Escape XLT with 144,000 miles, for about $6,500. The Nissan has a 4.0L six cylinder engine and a five speed automatic transmission. The Ford has a 3.0L FlexFuel six cylinder engine and a six speed automatic transmission.

Both run and drive well and have been well cared for. Is the Nissan worth considering or should I stick with Ford?

Thanks in advance,

Matt

I personally am not a fan of any Nissan other than the Frontier. If your budget is there I’d definitely opt for Toyota 4Runner or Highlander. I’d cross Ford completely off the list for reliable SUV as SUVs and Crossovers are just a side gig to them. Fords focus is trucks and that’s really it. The American manufacturers SUVs are really just garbage. Not saying there isn’t some out there with 200k mi or more but I’d rather not risk my money and rather put it into the company that has a better track record for SUVs and that certainly is Toyota.

I would stay away from both.  See below:

Even though the post below is about the Nissan Frontier but it’s the same platform as the Pathfinder:
