Hi,
I have a set of Cooper Evolution tires on my Grand Marquis which are about five years old and have 40K on them. No issues with wear or such but my mechanic noticed they are starting to show some slight dry rot. I don't drive very much these days except for longer highway trips. Do you think it's time for me to replace them? Thanks
5 years and 40k worth of heat cycles, and I suspect your wet grip is probably getting fairly marginal. Light use on dry pavement would probably be ok a bit longer. But unless you’re gonna sell off the car in the near future, I’d probably replace them now.
Do you think
that's kind of a visual question. Tire degradation depends on a lot of variables, and I can't see anything.
My tires are 5 years old and they're perfectly fine. But we don't really get dry rot at this latitude.
Five years that you have had the tires, or 5 years from the date on the tire?
except for longer highway trips.
Do you think it's time for me to replace them?
Yes.
Maybe $500 for a new set vs a potential high speed blowout + a tow + liability if there’s 3rd party damage and who knows what other hassle/s..
