1994 Ford e250 former airport van 158,000 transmission slipping, rebuild might be only option, low mileage but was used at airport in cold conditions for 20+ years, worth the cost of rebuild?
I worry about the engine. If I put the money into the transmission rebuild, much, much more than I paid for the van, and the engine fails, what then? Are there ways to determine whether the engine is healthy, now? It's at the shop right now, they're going to dig into the transmission and give me their diagnosis - will it be rebuild or nothing or something else? The van is very, very useful to me - helping people move, helps me with my kids, camping, that kind of thing. Rebuild might come in at $3500, that's worse case scenario. I can make money with this van as long as its running. Don't know about the engine. What should I do?? {black} thanks!!!!

How can we possibly tell from here?

A good mechanic should be able to determine the health of the engine.
worth the cost of rebuild?
It depends on the overall condition of the truck, taking into consideration rust, condition of the nearly 30-year-old suspension, electronics, etc., as well as the cost of a suitable replacement truck vs. the cost to rebuild this one. (If it was an airport van it would have done a lot of stop-and-go driving which are the hardest miles on a vehicle.)
