I currently own a 2002 Chevy Tahoe 5.3L got about 256,000 miles on it runs well but just recently I’ve been having issues where my speedometer is jumping around and all I’m left with sometimes is rpm’s until it kicks back in and does it all over again. whenever I drive can barely get to where I’m going half the time not sure what this issue is and how it came upon me. What shall I do next

not sure what this issue is and how it came upon me.

Just a wild guess but maybe the truck being 22 years old with high mileage has something to do with it?

You need to do some diagnosis. It's hard to tell from your description, is your speedometer just not working properly, or is the engine or transmission cutting out on you?

If I could post a video would make describing this much easier. But yes basically when I’m driving I could be doing 30-40 and out of nowhere it downshifts and my speedometer starts jumping around from 0-20 etc not able to accelerate at this point cause it’s basically like the truck thinks it’s in neutral even though it’s not if that makes sense tranny doesn’t go to the next gear it downshifted from. It jerks back into gear after the rpm’s have their fun then I’ll be alright for a min then repeat the process

You can post it on YouTube and share the link with us here.

Instructions for doing so can be found in the "READ THIS FIRST - Forum Guide" post near the top of the main page.

It sounds like your transmission is probably shot but you would need a hands-on transmission specialist to make that determination for certain. When is the last time it was serviced? Does it have enough fluid? What is the fluid's condition?

Was hoping you wouldn’t say that lol but I kinda thought the same but didn’t wanna believe it. Fluid is good I’ve only had it for about 2 months not sure when it last got serviced or if it ever got serviced at all since it came off the assembly line

Obviously we can't tell for sure from here but at that age and mileage it would not be unusual. Fluid condition can tell you a lot about what's going on, look to see if it's burnt or gritty.

I did notice some fluid leaking earlier today under the truck and when I checked the dipstick I had never seen a dryer stick in my life, threw two qrts in tested and still have the same issue. I think a tranny specialist is needed {black}:crying:

A replacement transmission is thousands of dollars. May not be worth it depending on the condition of the rest of the truck, particularly rust.
