Is the 2010 Ford F-150 5.4L V8 3 valve really a bad engine?

Looking to buy a used 2010 Ford F-150 from a dealer that’s a 5.4L V8 3valve engine with 105k mileage single owner personal use.

Tons of online comments about the 5.4L V8 3valves all seem to claim this engine is the worst Ford has ever made but I’m not sure what to make of this or how valid these claims are.

I am not sure if this is the Triton engine that all these comments claim is a junk engine but the Triton is also a 5.4L V8 3valve.

I know I’ll maintain it well and will probably upgrade some parts right away to get rid of any worn or even half worn things like belts, plugs etc etc. but generally want to know is this engine something to run away from as most people claim.

This is also a flex fuel vehicle but I don’t plan on running E85 but a nice option to have I guess.

The 4.6L and the 5.4L V8 2-valve are decent engines.  But the 5.4L V8 3-valve I would run away from it:

This video gets posted here a lot, and I can't get over something ...
Look at the oil when he shows the camshaft. It's CHUNKY like beef stew.

How much do you have to neglect your truck for it to get like that?
Would an owner who actually changes their oil even get this problem?

Well most of the vehicles our members ask about with this engine have high mileage and it’s not clear how meticulous the previous owner was on their maintenance. The regular 2 valve 5.4L is fine, but getting a higher mileage 3 valve 5.4L and not knowing the previous owner maintenance history is risky.

I can't image ANY engine working well with this amount of crud in it.

Nevertheless, this video often gets used to justify the claim it's the "worst engine Ford ever made!".

Possibly the worst engine ever made by Ford.  They seem to rush things into production before thoroughly testing them.

Horrible engine run away

The 5.4L 3V V8 is NOT a good motor. Save your money and look for an alternative.

Never had any issues with mine after 220K miles in a 3/4 ton passenger van (E-350).

But of course I'm not the expert here. I'm sure the toyota guys can tell you all about it .

I think the E350 had the 2-valve, not 3-valve 5.4

04 + had the 3 valve

... I think

wikipedia says otherwise

It did have the 2 valve.
I did say I'm not the expert :silly:

The 2 valve 5.4L was fine.

I'm less of an expert on Ford than you. I just know how to look things up.

the 5.3 L three valve is a good ending if you maintain it correctly

I love good endings
