Jacking up Engine from the oil pan

I have a 2013 Chevy Cruze with the 1.8l motor that has a timing belt. I was looking into how to change it and it involves taking off the motor mount. In a video I watched the car was jacked up from the oil pan. Some people say not to do this. I was wondering if this is safe to do as long as there is something to disperse the weight like a wood block on the jack.

I wouldn't under any circumstances.  Both the gasket and the pan are not designed for that kind of load, regardless of if the weight is dispersed.  Also given the ever lightening of cars, I am sure the pan is far thinner than 20 years ago.

Absolutely not....

I agree that it should be avoided. On the other hand, I have done it a couple of times with no problems.
