I’ve got a (used) 97’ Subaru WRX GC8 5sp MT with 130,000km (~90k miles) and I’m planning to take it back to the states from Japan when legal. What are some parts I should bring back with me since I’ve changed the clutch and flywheel already and don’t want to wait for long shipping times?
Everything you can. Prioritize them based on your budget and space you got.
Short answer is: anything that isn’t shared with US market Subarus of the same era. But I am afraid there isn’t a simple, comprehensive source of such information.
I would guess your best bet would be to find/join a local wrx/Subaru club and see if they could point you to an older mechanic who has extensive experience with late 90’s Subarus. You also might try contacting a youtuber named “MrSubaru1387”; he has some knowledge about older Subaru motors.
Personally, I probably would have bought a bug-eye and wrenched on it for a couple years before investing in JDM. But sounds like you got a fun old car. Good luck!
