I have a 2005 Pontiac Vibe 5 speed manual transmission with 140,000 miles. I brought it into the dealer yesterday for a recall on the pcm and an oil change. They said I need a new RF axle because it's starting to leak. It's not a huge leak but they recommended changing it now before it gets worse. They quoted me $410 USD.
I'm assuming this is something i have to get fixed pretty quick, right? Is $410 a reasonable price?
Do you have a picture of the leak you can post?
The axles only cost about $85 everywhere. $365 for labor seems a bit steep for an easy, bolt in installation.
Sorry i put axle instead of axle seal. They said the seal only costs around $20. So the labor's way overpriced?
Yes.
Did you confirm there is actually a leak there yourself, or are you going off what the dealer said? If the dealer told me the sky is blue outside, I would have to go out and check for myself.
I wouldn't believe a dealer if he told me what day it was.
Dealer labor is usually wayyyyyyyyy overpriced. I feel like they charge double or triple or quadruple what an Indy would charge.
Haven't checked for myself, I don't have anywhere to jack it up right now. The independent shops quoted me way less but they would be using an after market seal. Is that risky?
I was going to try to get the seal from GM but they said there's only one left and it needs to be shipped to them so I doubt they would give me it unless i got it serviced at the dealer.
