Hello Scotty and Moderators! I have a 1999 Lincoln Town Car Cartier. I would like to do some performance upgrades to the engine. I have heard that it is the same (or very similar to) the Mustang engine of its time, just tuned down a bit to make it feel leisurely. I don’t know if that is true or not, but either way, I would like to know what engine upgrades I could do the car to add some power without shortening the life of the components. It has the famous 4.6 liter SOHC 220hp V8 engine. And it is the dual exhaust model, which I believe was sort of a “sport” model in the Town Car line lol. It isn’t underpowered, but I thought it would be fun to soup up as a bit of a sleeper car. Thank you for any suggestions, and I apologize if this question rambled on a bit.😃
You want to hop up a Lincoln Town Car? Well, I own a speed shop. Some thoughts:
1. Do you realize how heavy that car is?
2. It uses a very similar design to the Mustang engine, yes. But as you said, it is built for comfort and does not have the performance internals the Mustang motors do, nor the tuning.
3. How fast are you wanting to go? You say a sleeper, but are you wanting to race the car? Against Mustangs, Camaros, etc.?
4. How deep are your pockets? I'm hoping, like, Grand Canyon deep......
In short, yank the motor, drop a 32V 4.6L Supercharged SVT V8 out of the 03-04 Cobra into it, drop the tranny, put in a fully built Magnum XL transmission, drop the exhaust and go Kooks long tubes stepped into high flow cats with SLP Loudmouth II mufflers. Finish with SLP stainless tips. Slap a cold air intake on, hit the dyno and tune for 12psi. You'll have a giant, floaty rocket ship with a little suspension work and bigger, wider tires outback that still seats five comfortably.
Now, the cost breakdown:
SVT remanufactured block: $16k fully forged
Magnum Trans: $8000
New rear gears and various suspension: $4000
Intake: $400
Exhaust and headers: $4000
Blower Cams: $1000
Big brake kit: $2500
Wheels and Tires: $2500
Dyno Time: $2000
Labor: $6000
So.....yeah I'm gonna need about $46k. Cash, check, or charge? {black}:laughingoutloud:
Wow... umm, that doesn’t quite fit my budget... that is actually $3000 dollars more than the car cost new ha ha. I don’t have any plans on racing it against anything really, just wanted to add some pep without breaking the bank. And I wanted to keep the original motor for its reliability and well, I don’t think a new motor is in the budget either... thank you for the cost breakdown though, it was eye opening (and jaw dropping) to say the least lol. I might go that route sometime down the road (like a decade), but for now, I can’t afford anything close to that.
I hear you man. It gets expensive QUICK. I could just tell you throw on an exhaust and intake but I know you wouldn't be too happy. It takes a lot of power to move that much weight around and you also don't want to spoil the excellent reliability those cars have. 🙂
Thank you for your input, it has been very enlightening. I guess I’ll just slap a sport exhaust on it and pretend it’s fast lol. At least it will sound really cool😁. I’ll just wait and save up for an old beater fox body Mustang to fix up. It will probably be cheaper than trying to speed up my Lincoln. But hey, who knows, maybe someday I’ll be able to afford that kind of upgrade. And then I will have the fastest Town Car around😁.
