Hi Everyone,

I moved to Japan a year ago and need a new car.  I'm looking at a 3 year old used Toyota Voxy or a Honda Stepwagon.  Which is more reliable?

Thank you,

Jason

hello Jason,

they can both go a long time. The Honda will be a bit zippy and better looking, the Toyota will last longer.

But in Japan we do not drive as much as in US (we lack the space! 🙂 ) if you take good care will both will last forever. If is a matter of which is the best deal (current mileage vs price).

If you are looking at a three-year old car you also want to consider whether the shaken inspection has been done if you plan to have it done by a third-party mechanic.  If it has already been performed that can save you > $1000.

As the previous poster noted, mileage is not such a big deal depending on where you live.  I had a three-year assignment living in central Tokyo and I only managed to put about 6,000 km on the clock by the end of my job.  While I got a few trips out into Chiba prefecture, it is hard to roll up the miles when traffic is only moving at 20 MPH.  There is a big business exporting three and five year old Japanese cars around the Pacific Rim (especially Australia & NZ) because so many are still in such good shape.
