Can I tow long distances with a CVT?

Hello everyone,

I have a honda crv with a 1.5t engine and a cvt. I am planning to move 1500 miles away. One of my options is getting a 4 by 8 trailer from uhaul and tow it with my crv. My car is rated for 1500lbs towing and I plan on staying just under that weight limit. My concern is towing for such a long distance. Does anyone have experience towing long distance with a cvt transmission? Is it worth the risk to move my stuff or should I find other options?

The car has 104k miles. I changed the transmission fluid & filter at 100k and at 50k

Thank you,

Mark

I wouldn't tow anything with a CVT

Do not tow with a CVT if you want it to last.

Nobody said you can’t. You certainly can, but expect the lifespan of your CVT to shorten due to the added strain & stresses of towing.

To answer your question, I guess CVTs are ‘delicate’, if you compare them with conventional automatic transmissions for heavy duty use.

If you’re willing to live with the risks of causing premature wear, and you’re confident the terrain on your route won’t be challenging, by all means..

I would not risk it.  I would just call  PODS or one of those places, fill up the container and have them deliver it.

Why wouldn't you guys tow with a cvt? Just wondering since honda says you can. I believe you guys more 🙂

CVTs are failure prone enough on their own. They just can't pull any serious weight. Throw towing into the mix, and you can expect a very short life from it. There's a reason you don't see CVTs on utility vehicles like pickups and vans.
Technically, Honda is right. You can tow. But they don't say was the consequences will be. And they would love for you to wear it out and have to buy another one. If they stipulated that it should not be used for towing, then a lot less people would buy it.

Nah don't, it will strain the CVT and it will just wear out faster. Heck, the previous-gen Nissan Pathfinder had a CVT and even though they rated it to tow 6000 lbs., I wouldn't trust it considering it has a CVT.
