Hello Scotty,

I live in Las vegas and I've watched your videos for several years.  I recently was involved in an accident totaling my beloved 2003 toyota rav4. I'm looking at a private party 2011 honda pilot and exl. I'm a single mother,  I have 3 children 15yr, 10 years, and a newborn (born Christmas eve). I work 2 full time gas station jobs and I need a reliable vehicle.  I'm concerned because the honda pilot has 170,000 miles and they want $8,900. Do you think it's a good buy? Is there any common problems I should worry about for the 2011 honda pilot awd? The vehicle is on Craigslist and is located in uppity neighborhood but the seller said he's the 3rd owner. I just want to make the right choice.  I'm not sure if it's been a rental vehicle or not previously. I would love to hear back from you.  I look at it tomorrow at 10am. Any advice?

First of all congrats on the newborn.

Also, they are asking way too much for that Pilot. They are good cars with some small issues mainly with the engine it has cylinder deactivation and all that fun stuff that wear out the engine and make it burn oil etc. I wouldn't buy one with that many miles especially at that price range.

Check out the Used Car Buying Guide linked below for more information on buying used cars.

Scotty also has videos on the Honda Pilot check it out:

@DayWalker also has good researched information on these Honda V6 engines he will most likely be on shortly and give a ton of information that I can't give at midnight.

Good luck!

Price is too high honestly. Unless they can come down to $6000 or so I'd pass.

Find yourself another RAV4 with $9000..

That's my favorite generation of Honda Pilot.  They look rugged, and TMK, they are relatively reliable vehicles, but I will let other chime in on that.

Just looking at your area, it may be an okay deal for a private party transaction.  Some areas it might be more, some might be less.

My only concern would be the timing belt.  It is a maintenance item that usually done every 100,000 to 150,000 miles depending on the make and model.  Ask if it has been already changed recently.  If it has, it may be a good deal.  If it hasn't perhaps try negotiating.  Heck, negotiate regardless.

Assuming everything checks out, it may be a decent buy.
