manual transmission everlasting

I had a 1988 Jeep Comanche pick up with the 4.0 L engine and 5 speed synchro transmission. I put over 75,000 miles on the original clutch in 18 years of driving. When I sold it in 2007, it still pulled hard in all the gears.

This is how I drove it. I only used the clutch to start the truck to move, then I "floated" the trans, that is, shifting the gears without disengaging the clutch. What do you think of this procedure? Wil it work on modern vehichles?

You are describing "rev-matching". Very common practice on manual transmissions. Even some paddle shifter cars will do it.
