All of a sudden the 3 started shaking (like it was going to stall), check engine light was flashing and traction control I light went off. Lost the ability to change gears when switched from drive to manual)

2012 Mazda 3 Skyactive GS
automatic

Never has had issues before. Called for a tow, as I am not at home and therefore don’t have an obd2 scanner with me

Update: FIXED

Misfire on cylinder #2, just needed a new ignition coil.

You're going to need scan results to get an idea of what's going on.

From what I can see online, a flashing check engine is most likely a misfire. Seems to match the symptoms online too, though I am not by any stretch a mechanic.

Sounds like it’s likely coils as I replaced spark plugs with NGK about 8-9 months/ 9,000 kms ago (5,600 miles ago)

Again just results from google, and would welcome any insights

Lots of things can cause misfires other than coils and plugs, there's a troubleshooting section in the site FAQ.

I've never had misfire caused by bad coils. It was always related to air and fuel.

But you're wasting your time guessing. Instead, troubleshoot hands-on, or let a mechanic do it.

You can rule out the coils right away by checking for spark which doesn't take long. From there you can start basic diagnosis like measure fuel pressure etc. But the path should really be based on the OBD data, which will save a ton of time. Otherwise you're just flying blind.
