When did Mercedes Benz start producing cars that were endless money pits? My guess is starting in the 90s.

IMHO probably 1965; but I had a friend and his 1968 was just great in 2001.

Anything past the '80s. But make no mistake, they are ALL expensive to maintain/repair.

Though you would probably spend a good amount of money into repairs and maintenance because of the type of vehicle they are, both BMW and Benz were making very reliable vehicles into the late 80s and early 90s.

I have heard it was in 1997.
