Hi Scotty,
My R170 AC not blowing cold. Shop says it's the compressor. How can I be sure that's it? He wants $500 for the compressor and $200 for drier plus labor. I found Denso and Delphi compressors for under $300 and driers for under $50. Thanks, Mike
If a compressor is bad it will be making noise, will be seized up, will have an inoperative clutch, or will not develop sufficient pressure when running. Frequently people (even some mechanics) will blame the compressor first when there's an AC problem without doing a proper diagnosis first.
That said, compressors on late-model (21st-century) cars are both more complex and more cheaply made than those from decades ago. It seems the newer they are the more fragile they are. Some even have plastic internal parts! Therefore they are prone to wear out and fail more quickly than in older models.
I would ask your mechanic what specific diagnostic steps led to the conclusion that the compressor is bad. Bear in mind that if you do need to replace it make sure you get a new compressor, not a rebuilt one. Shop prices for parts are always going to be higher than regular retail.

Find somebody else to do the work, or, buy the parts yourself and have the work done to avoid their mark up on the parts. Make sure to get your old parts after the job to prove they were replaced.
