The 6th gen Camry (2007-2011) w/ the 4 cyl was infamous for burning oil like insane, but how did it compare to the 5th gen Hyundai Sonata (2006-2010) w/ its 4 cyl?

Well with the Hyundai the motor is likely to catch fire. If you google it there is numerous accounts of Hyundai not being able to build motors correctly.

Those Hyundais/Kias from the late 2000s used the Theta I engine family, not the Theta II which was prone to catching fire.

Back then the Hyundais with 4 cylinder engines were mechanically simpler and somewhat better than the new ones. Don't expect more than 100-150k miles though, because they are electrical nightmares and are all cheap plastic. I would much rather have a Camry V6 or previous generation Camry than a Sonata.
