I am looking to buy a 2011 Chevy Caprice with the V8 L77, a 6L80 transmission, all with 110k miles for $10k in Ohio (trying to get it for $7k). Its a retired cop car used in south western Pensylvania with no accidents or records I could find. There is rust only on the exhaust, and some surface rust on the rockers. It still has all of the lights, a cage in the back, and the radio (all disconnected from power). I've heard that these were based upon the Holden Ute, which supposedly were overall very reliable, safe, and solid platforms for the price. GM has left a bad taste in my mouth with everything they've made within the past couple decades; is this the exception, or is this going to be a rotting pile of junk I can't fix or salvage within the next couple years?
Police cars tend to be beaten half to death or worse before they are sold off. I would avoid it on that basis alone.
I wouldn't buy an ex-police car unless you were planning to use it as a knock around car. They get hard miles put on them and tend to have a lot of idle hours as well.
$10k also seems steep to me as I've seen some of the newer Chargers and Explorers going for that with less mileage.
