My dad topped off the coolant on his 2016 Subaru Forester with 35k miles. He just bought the generic green stuff and if I’m not mistaken his Subaru uses blue coolant. I warned him about using another color coolant but he didn’t listen. He likes to keep his cars for a while and mixing coolant colors is a great way to reduce engine life. Will his boxer engine be okay?

It would be best to flush out the cooling system and install the proper coolant. You don't want to use coolant with the wrong chemistry for that engine or mix coolants with different chemistry. In particular, Subaru boxer engines have the coolant always in contact with the head gaskets even when not running and the wrong coolant may damage the gaskets over time.
