I have a question about modern car transmissions. It doesn't matter what car I drive. 2017 Hyundai sonata 2017 Toyota rav4 even my 2008 Chysler Town and Country. Every now and then my transmission will slam into gear. Almost like the computer doesn't know what to do.
You nailed it! Computers are programmed with a "map" that suppose to react - in a perfect way - to all your inputs! Trouble is that your inputs are quite sophisticated, …, not always perfect. You are human! And so, when your input does not - exactly - match a point on computer’s "map", … shirt happens: … computer picks a closest match, … and BANG!

This doesn't happen on cars equipped with a manual transmission.
not many of those new on the road these days either
Manuals are not without fault. Consider an awkward cable linkages on transversely mounted engine cars with manual transmissions, … or olden VWs with rods and levers and sliding shafts. Try to get these react precisely as you wish. Under pressure. How often do you miss a shift, … or drop in into a wrong gear? Sure there are some excellent manual, … Miata, S2000 comes to mind, … but those are exceptions: … stick shift sits right on top of a transmission. But even those, … lately, with rev-matching "nannies", cause problems at times, … like those in latest BMWs, for example.
Anyway, … current automatics are marvels of engineering, … and if these are programmed correctly, it’s absolutely magic! Try it, … Go!

I didn't say that they were perfect I was just saying that they don't bang into gear.
Maybe not on their own, but they still can due to user error. {pear}
My 2004 Nissan Sentra also does this going to 1st to 2 gear and it only does this during mild acceleration. I don't know what it is but like to know to.
is it slamming or is it taking awhile to shift into second gear, if it's taking awhile to shift your transmission may be slipping which can be bad... but then again if its from 2004 you're looking at just buying another car rather than fixing it probably.
