I'm deciding between a petrol or a diesel. But worry about emissions systems in modern diesels.
My journey to work is 15 km (30 minutes) not on a highway. I drive 8 km in the evening. My yearly mileage is 11,000 km.
I'm willing to take it out on a highway for 60 minutes once a week. Will this be enough to mitigate the soot build up from all the prior short journeys throughout the week?
And is it true that modern diesels may struggle to meet emissions as they age due to soot build up in the intake manifolds?
In general diesels are made for long trips. Here in Europe people were buying them due fuel economy. Those who were driving them short distances all the time, had usually problems passing inspections when it came to measuring exaust gases, similar problems is with petrol engines too. In such case you made a long trip before inspection to pass.
In my opinion it makes sense buying a diesel if you drive more than 15000 km per year. Anyway modern diesels are too complex due emissions requirements. Also diesel maintenance costs more than a petrol one.
You're driving. That's your distance and with the price of diesel as high as it is, I would pass on buying a diesel
