I have a 1996 honda accord 4 cly the engine turns on and it accelerates and it does make the gears but when I press the gas petal it won't move forward and backward

Automatic or manual transmission? If automatic, your transmission is shot. (Or very low on fluid, which would damage it.) If it's a manual transmission your clutch is shot.
