Why does van roll backwards in Park

Scotty, My Dad has a 2005 Ford E250 Conversion Van that will occasionally roll backwards when put in park. It has about 145,000 miles on it and recently began having this problem when my father was driving home from work. Sometimes after he puts the vehicle in park, it will begin to roll backwards after the transmission is put in park which could potentially cause a dangerous situation. He thinks it could be a gear shifter, but do you think it is the transmission or the shifter that's the problem. It has not been scanned yet but any help would be appreciated thanks.

you mean roll back a little bit, or just keeps going until something stops it?

could be either. Start with low hanging fruit. Inspect the cable and shifting mechanism
