Scotty, I am looking for a used hatchback to buy, lower cost the better. I need it to be able to fit a drum set. Prefer manual transmission. I have considered a VW GTI or Golf. Any other suggestions as to good ones to buy.
Don't even consider the newer Golfs. The Golf is probably the most reliable VW in US because literally everything else they make is new technology which is junk. I would not get one still they are overpriced consider something else.

New or used?
2016 or newer cars would include
Honda Fit
Toyota Corolla IM
Toyota Corolla Hatchback
Scion IM
Mazda 3/Toyota Yaris (similar platforms)
All are good with manual transmissions.

I would not stick to Golfs from 6th generation and newer.
