Hi Scotty, I just purchased a new 2024 tundra imax about 3 weeks ago. After learning about the recall for the 2022 and 2023 I'm worried that the 24's are next. Today I did an oil change at 1145 miles. I ran a magnet through the oil after it was drained and cut open my filter. My findings are a little worrisome. Some metal was found on the magnet but most of the metal was in the paper filter. My questions, if I can should I get out of the truck (would cost me)? Also how much metal in the filter is normal for a first oil change?
how much metal in the filter is normal for a first oil change?
zero visible metal is normal.
scientifically speaking ... maybe 30ppm or so, but you'd have to send the oil off to a lab.
Even if the engine is brand new? My understanding is that once an engine is broken in there should be no metal.
engines ALWAYS shed SOME metal. But it should be within tolerances, and it definitely shouldn't be visible.
The dissolved stuff will come out in an oil change. But the visible stuff will destroy your engine.
OK. I wouldn't worry too much yet. You've already taken the initial depreciation from driving it off the lot, so as long as it's running OK, don't make any snap decisions yet. After all, anything else you get could have problems of its own.
I agree with @imperator about getting an oil analysis. Drive it about 5000 miles on the new oil and then send a sample to Blackstone Labs. They can tell you whether there is any unusual wear in the engine (and maybe even what is wearing, if any). If it comes back OK, then I would keep doing an analysis about once a year. If you see any problems, you can deal with it then (file a warranty claim or trade it for something else).
