What's the deal on the newer GM vans? Are they like the old ones that could go 500,000 miles or so or did they follow the path of GM vehicles like the Silverado 1500, Cruze, Trax, etc.?

They're not as bad as the pick-ups. But still not great.
They might go 500k, but not without electronic issues, and probably not with the original tranny.
But the selection isn't great. Personally, I would still choose one over Ford, Nissan or Dodge.
I wouldn't go Mercedes unless it was earning my business huge money and it was under warranty, or leased.
