Can I change to new ac refrigerant without changing compressor (assuming it doesn't leak)? Compressor clutch DOES engage in testing.

In theory you can keep your old compressor. In practice R134a runs at higher pressures than R12a which will put more strain on your 33-year-old compressor so it's a bit of a crap shoot. You do need to flush all of the old mineral oil out of the system (it's not compatible with R134a) and change the drier. This might also be a good opportunity to replace those decades-old AC hoses.
