New struts are squeaking.

Bought Monroe quick struts for wife’s car. (I know that can start a whole other argument) I ask please refrain from that and just focus on the main concern haha. Installed the struts, torqued everything correctly started driving and first bump I hit makes a squeaking noise almost like the boot is rubbing up against something. Called Monroe and they said there are no reports of any defects with the quick struts I bought. If I squirt a little silicone spray up by the boot it goes away until the spray wears off and it goes to squeaking again. Opinions on if I was sent defective struts or any other input y’all have I appreciate it.

can you post a photo and tell us what vehicle it is?

It’s a 15 Elantra. Unfortunately can’t get a photo right now.

does it look like this?

I always make sure I tighten suspension fasteners AFTER the suspension is loaded (vehicle sitting at normal height). Torquing them down with the wheel hanging can apply torsion to bushings and lead to squeaking.Try loosening the bolts off and then tightening them back down.

Rears look like that but I replaced the front. I will try doing that and see what happens. It’s weird because the squeak is coming right where the rubber boot is. Almost like the boot is rubbing against something.

maybe it's just really squeaky rubber.

Yeah possibly, I mean they have lifetime warranty so if I wanted to swap them out again I can.

I would just return them and install another set.....

I’ve used them and never had an issue.

Looking at some reviews it seems like the Monroe quick strut is actually known to squeak after a certain amount of use. 🤷‍♂️ Since they have a lifetime warranty I agree with you Oneimich. I’ll probably just return and install another set.

I would try another set. Not going to lecture you on the choice of Monroe, but even those should not be making squeaking noise right away. That would irritate the crud out of me.

If you get a second set and the same thing happens, well, I guess it is what it is. @mountainmanjoe gave you good advice on how to tighten things down. Always do it under load so everything is in the best position.

I'm curious to know if this noise persists in the second set. Please let us know.

Yes I think I’ll try putting a new set on. I find it interesting if I put a very small amount of silicone spray near the boot the noise is immediately gone. If/when I get a new set on I’ll update if the new set squeaks or not.

I am also finding that interesting. I'm guessing it may be a new design and the material rubbing was something they did not think about/care about/notice. My concern would be if it is dry rubber on rubber, does that mean the boot will wear out faster?

Very well could be, when I called Monroe about it they were surprised as well and I was told there really hasn’t been any reports of defects for that quick strut. And honestly it really only happens if the car goes over a big bump like a speed bump or something.

Hmm. Well, if it isn't doing it constantly then longevity may not be affected. But I can imagine it would be annoying. Thanks for the info.

It drove me up a wall when I first put them on but now I don’t really think about it.
