Odometer stopped working, oil change intervals?

I have a 2002 Chevrolet Avalanche Z71 and the miles are unknown but is more than likely over 200,000. The odometer shows 59,000 and does not change, but when I’m driving the tripometer counts up from zero and when I turn it off and then back on again the tripometer will reset to zero again. I don’t know how many miles I’m driving but my “change oil” reminder comes on at what seems to be regular intervals. The main question I have would be “is it ok to wait for that light to tell me to change the oil?”

I would at least verify what the light is saying. Time to start keeping a trip log book. Or if you have an OBD scan tool, check the engine hours. Around 200h should be fine.

Why not repair your odometer?
