Oil Change After Break-in

Hi Scotty,

I just bought a Miata.  (I was very happy to learn how much you like this car.)  My question is whether you think it is a good idea to change the oil after the break-in period of a new car. Somewhere I heard or read that changing the oil after break-in helps to eliminate any engine shavings that occur from the motor breaking in.  Would I be wasting my money changing the oil after break-in or does it really help prolong engine life?  Thank you.

Sure you could just change it after the first thousand miles

Take it to 1000 mi and change it if you want peace of mind. My personal opinion is there is no break in period anymore. These motors are ready to go from the time they’re installed. Unless your manual says different I wouldn’t worry about “breaking” the motor in.

Follow the manufacturer's recommendations.  Me, I change the first batch of oil in a new or rebuilt engine at 600 miles.
