- Hi Scotty, I got a 2019 Mercedes cargo van with 24,000 miles. It's a four cylinder twin turbo. The factory recommended oil and filter change is every 12,500 miles with Mobil 1 synthetic 0-40. I was going to get a engine oil analysis. What do you recommend?
@rich808
If that's what the manufacturer recommends, you can safely do that. There is scientific evidence that you can go that long safely with quality oil like Mobil.
But remember one thing:
"Oil is cheap, engines are expensive" as Scotty tells us.
Always go with manufacturer's recommended oil and change the oil every 5,000 miles. Scotty always repeat this when talking about oil changes: oil is cheap, engines are not. Rather spend a little more on oil than having issues with the engine because of dirty oil.
I would use whatever oil the factory recommendation is. In this case, any 0w-40 with Mercedes Benz rating. For me personally 12,500 miles for every oil change is a bit too much for a turbocharged engine on that van. I would say 8,000 miles is more reasonable. I believe on those newer vans, there is an oil condition sensor that will tell you when you need to change the oil. If you don't have a dipstick, then you have an oil condition snesor that constantly updates your oil change interval on your dash.
I always change my trucks oil every 7,500 miles. Yes it's a Chevy, and no I haven't ever had any problems.
Oil is cheap and changing it is fun, I do mine every 5k except when it hits 100 everyday in the summer and then I change it after 3k due to temp breakdown but for longevity please don't skimp on cheap infrequent oil changes if you want to reach 200k plus miles.
an analysis costs more than an oil change.
A case of toilet paper is going to cost more than an oil change soon!
