Changing Oil Brands

Topic starter

Hello, I own three GM vehicles and get the oil changed regularly. I have only used Mobil 1 because I always thought of it as a good oil and it has the dexos that GM requires. People has been telling me to start using Carol Edge. I've never been fond of the idea of switching brands, but if it helps the engine then I would like to try it. Any suggestions on Mobil 1 VS. Castrol Edge?

Any brand oil that has a Dexos approved logo on the bottle is fine. Oil is oil, they have to meet API certifications for every formulation, that's what the sunburst on the front of the bottle shows. Even Walmart SuperTech oil, if it has Dexos certification and is the proper weight, it can be used.

I use Pennzoil Platinum in my new cars, but if I can't find it, I use something else. My '79 Pontiac doesn't take light oil, so I use whatever is on sale.

You can change brands as often as you like. The Dexos certification guarantees that it will work in your engine.

It probably won't.

If I were you I'd just buy the cheapest Dexos oil you can find.

I’ve switched back and forth between those two brands. Those two are usually my preferences, I usually go for any big name brand that is on sale. And occasionally Costco Kirkland brand, which is DEXOS specified.

As long as it has the proper specs, and in your case DEXOS, you should be fine.

I will have to get another brand too since Toyota 0W20 is not avaliable in my area.
