2008 Ford Fusion AWD, 3L, automatic, 96k miles. Oil light comes on when engine temp is perfect. Went off for a month, now it's back. No symptoms at all and oil level perfect and changed every 4k (conventional). 8 months now! What's up?
Check your oil pressure with a mechanical gauge. If it's OK you probably have a bad oil pressure sending unit.
Am I hurting the car if that sending unit is bad or do I just have to live with the light (if pressure is good)?
Money is tight
If pressure is good you won't hurt anything. However if the warning light isn't working properly you won't know if you actually lose oil pressure at some point in the future and then it's goodbye engine. Oil pressure sending units aren't very expensive, about $20 for OEM Motorcraft at rockauto.com.
You, sir, are a nice man. Thanks for taking the time to answer! Very much appreciated!!

You'll know it if there is genuinely low oil pressure. I have a '79 Pontiac that started really blowing its rear main seal. I only had the one car, the Mustang and my Ranger were both being loaned for the day. I saved the motor by keeping it filled, which consumed 8 quarts in 200 miles, and had it repaired by a shop we use sometimes. It will run like normal, but I wouldn't chance it with such a critical sensor, and the fact it's only $20. Get a new one. Which is better, a new car or a sensor? Get the sensor, you'll thank me later.
