Hi
I have a 1952 Ford pick up truck automatic transmission, mileage unknown
I drive it about 10 times a year
it has a 283 Chevy small block motor in it
I’ve been using 10 W 30 oil without zinc by mistake
after listening to Scotty on his YouTube channel I found out that I need to use oil with zinc
should I be using 10 W 30 oil with zinc or 15 W 40 oil with that has zinc in it ??
I know some guys that are using 15 W 40 in their old cars from the 1960 ‘s. I don’t know why they do use this grade of oil
please advise on what is the right grade of oil to use
Paul
I would go with the 15w-40 as in older cars they tend to have more wear and that extra viscosity makes sure that everything is lubricated properly especially at running temperature. <---Just one reason why someone with an old car might want a higher viscosity oil. You can google if you want to learn more.
If you only drive it very little, I would also make sure you get the thing up to running temperature before putting strain on the motor as since it will sit, the oil will gravitate towards the pan until it gets shot up back into the head and circulated when turning on the key for the first time in forever. If you live in a colder region or a place that gets cold frequently then 10w30 is fine.
Use 10W30.
