On a used SUV, how often does the timing belts have to be changed?

Really depends, do an inspection on the belt and see if there are cracks or anything. I’ve had belts that only went 50k mi before change, I’ve also had a belt go 100k mi before it needed changed.

Check the manufacturer's recommendations. Most timing chains and belts are changed out at around 100-120K miles.

100k miles is the average but you should also consider the age as well.
