Opinion Land Rover Discovery 1994

I know Scotty & most on the people here are not big fans of JLR, but I'd like to hear the experience of old Discovery owners.

A friend of mine is giving me (for free) an old 1994 Diesel Discovery, 150,000 miles. It has never been used in 3 years, and in the last 10 years they just ride 7,000 miles. I know that for getting it running I'll have to spend quite some money on a battery, 4 new wheels, timing belt and many other repairs that I can do myself.

I'd like to hear about the experience of other old Land Rover owners (Discovery, Defender, etc.). I guess that these old tanks were more reliable than the new ones, which are a waste of money. I'm in Europe

Those were most horrible vehicles when new - BMW ownership of Rover Group at that point! There was this fad, locally, among oil ‘bidness’ executives, in my ‘hood (Calgary, Alberta), in mid-90s. Leasing companies paradise: … every CEO, CFO, et.al., had to have one! Well, … most of those Discoveries ended up being returned to leasing companies promptly, … most of them needed some kind of service, repair, what-have-you, … weekly!

Anyway, … since it is free, I would simply apply bit of lipstick, … and some mascara onto it - don’t spend much! - and than I would punt it onto some "wanna-have-one-of-these!"

Thanks for your comments!

I kind of feel I'll keep it. I just want it to be "drivable", not to work perfectly. I'm only planning to drive it 3,000km/year on a farm.

If after changing timing belt, 4 wheels, battery & service belt, I'd sell it and recover my investment.

Anyone here with experience with this car? What was your best/worst experience working on it?

What diesel engine? if it is a 200 or 300 TDI it is good, they are indestructible. a bit slow, but they keep running.  Change the oil regularly!, not just the engine, but also the gearbox, transferbox and differentials

200 TDI! Yes, that's what I thought, they have a rough driving, but with basic maintenance and they can run forever. Thank you for your feedback!
