Just got my license and looking for a used car to buy that is reliable. The budget is around 6-8k. I like civics but heard their transmissions go out. Help?

certain years had problem transmissions, but not all.
Go to the main page and click on the 'FAQ' topic and then 'Which used car should I buy?'
There will be some lists of Hondas not to buy.

You should check the vehicle complaints and Toyota/Honda to avoid lists as they have many Honda models you should avoid.
From what I know the 2010-2011; 2013 Civic is the best years.
