What are your opinions and thoughts on hand-built engines such as the ones from the Nissan GT-R (built by Takumi in some clean room), Shelby GT-500, and a lot of the higher-end Mercedes Benz AMG models? Are they any better built?

Depends totally on the person who is building it and if they know what they are doing.
Whenever I hear "hand built", I hear "expensive to repair". The SVT cars I have are hand built motors and they have served me very well. AMG makes excellent motors but that's what the Germans do.
If there were a hand built Kia motor, I'd consider it worse than the normal production motors. A company has to prove they can make a motor in general before even considering a specialty engine.
