I am replacing A/C compressor and receiver/dryer. Would it be safe to assume 3 oz of tag oil would be sufficient ?

No, you need to check instructions for the new compressor and the specifications for your AC system. (If your compressor is being replaced due to internal mechanical failure you have more work to do.)

The compressor is not new. I got it from a pull-a-part place.  The original compressor, the clutch messed up, so its not internal issues with the compressor.  So I have no instruction sheet to go by.  The used compressor is drained of oil.  It is empty.  Per the FSM, the entire system holds 6.2 ounces of refrigerant oil.  So I made a guess of 3 ounces to add directly to the compressor before putting it back together and beginning leak tests, etc.
