Hello, I have a 2010 f150 167k miles with the 4.6l modular interference engine. At the local mechanic shop they told me that the timing chain and oil pump should be replaced and quoted $3500. My car doesn't have a noticable rattle, ticking, or any codes. At this mileage though, I'm sure it might need to be done and was wondering if I should just do it myself?
Are you experienced or this is your first time? If it is your first time, it is better to have a mechanic do it.
The timing chain should last as long as the engine as long as the oil was changed regularly.
I'm not aware of any particular problems with the oil pumps in those 4.6's either.
Pretty sure they're just trying to sell you something you don't really need.
Getting a second opinion wouldn't hurt, but I'm pretty sure those things wouldn't need done, given proper maintenance was performed.
