Is a used 2013 Hyundai Accent hatchback with 50,000 miles and an automatic transmission a good first car for my 16 year old son?

They are usually good until about 100,000 miles. May even last longer with highway miles.

I agree with nick20s.
Depending on the price, you can consider Japanese if you want them to last longer.

I have an Ascent myself. Four speed auto transmission, 1.8l, built 2008 in Japan and has done over 221.000 km so far. Still runs like a dream and if something does break (which I found rarely happens) there are plenty of parts around.
Make sure it has been looked after in terms of servicing.
