09 Honda CR-V making ticking noise at idle

150000 miles and at idle sounds little rough. As far as I know never had plugs changed or anything. I bought in may 2019.

It’s also started making a clunking noise on uneven pavement in passenger side rear. Struts, springs, and sway bar links are newer in rear.

It’s tough to have no history of service on a vehicle!

As far as engine ticking: probably valves were never adjusted. This should be done, or at least checked every 100k.

Plugs should be replaced at about 100k, too. Also, throttle valve body cleaned, … say at 50k intervals, as well as mass air flow sensor cleaned at the same.

Other stuff: air filter, vacuum lines, rubber bellows, etc. should be all checked, too, for cracks, looseness, disconnection. All clamps for tightness.

Some of that stuff is easy to do, it’s inexpensive. Valve adjustment, not so. Unless you have a written down procedure with pictures. It’s actually very easy, but time consuming if you happened to have Honda’s copy of a procedure.

Anyway, start with simple things first and see if you get some improvement. Or, … just find a Scotty-type of a mechanic in your area and simply let him/her loose.

As to suspension, check it over. Lift one corner at the time off the ground, shake things around, look around. See if you can spot something or hear something - loose, broken, leaking shock absorbers. Check strut bearing for looseness.  Check for or cracked rubber bushings.

Be safe at all times, … and good luck!

Thanks! I’m pretty mechanically inclined. Worked on machines for years just not cars. Have any idea where I can find honda instructions on this? I can prob handle just about anything if I can see it or have instructions. Thanks!

Well, … you can probably get the whole bible for your car! Honda Motor Co., part number P/N 61SWA03 Volume 1 and Volume 2.

Look on the net, you should be able to find a used copy. Just buy these books if you want to take your CRV completely apart, … and reassemble it with full confidence, … and drive it again!

Also, look at the back of your owners manual. There is an official address printed for the source of these books, … since Honda did not distribute these manuals directly, … at least not in the U.S. In Canada, however, Honda did.

Cheers,
F.S.

P.S.: Also, there is ALLDATA DIY. It’s a subscription service. It’s cheap. I think everyone should have a subscription for any car one wants to hold on to for a long time!
