1995 Toyota Camry Poor fuel mileage

Hello all,

I have a 1995 Toyota Camry LE sedan (4 Cylinder) with 143,000 miles. My rated mpg is 23 city/31 hwy. Upon calculating my real fuel mpg at the pump the other day, I was averaging only 20mpg. I am not a heavy foot driver and 70% of my driving is highway. I understand ratings are not the most accurate, but regardless, what could be causing my poor fuel mileage? I have used 91 octane since purchasing the car in August 2021.

Yeah, you should be getting better mileage - but there are a bunch of things that might be reducing your mpg. Typically, people lose a 1/2 a mpg here, a 1/2 an mpg there, and so on. Have you replaced your air filter and plugs recently? Run some Techron additive to clean your injectors? Checked/maintained proper tire pressure? Checked for a dragging  brake pad. I'd stick to regular - I  had a 96 Camry V6 and it ran fine on regular for 300k miles - and probably a lot more  after I sold it.

Unless your owner's manual specifies the use of higher-octane gas you are just wasting money fueling up with anything but regular.
