Poor Gas Mileage on 2024 Honda CR-V Hybrid Sport

After driving my 2024 Honda CR-V Hybrid Sport (AWD) for a little over 2 weeks and a couple of hundred miles, the 28.3mpg max. falls way short of the advertised 40 / 34 / 37.  Is this indicative of a system malfunction.  Can I do anything to change settings?  My 2022 Ridgeline gets 25mpg max. and averages 19 when doing short runs with it's V-6 engine.  My biggest disappointment is the trade of my 2016 Nissan Rogue with 40,000 miles and a trailer receiver.  The 2.5 liter 4 cylinder was way better on steep grades than the 2.0 Honda latched to the hybrid system while topping out at 32mpg while using it for storing and carrying heavy scrap.  I not only lost a few mpg on average, but received an answer of not being able to install a trailer hitch and a ridiculous price of $750 for cross bars to make a usable roof rack.  With all of my money down and trade, I still had to take the four year financing @ 3.9% to lower the payments close to what I pay on the pandemic priced Ridgeline @ 0.9% APR.

Any help or advice will be greatly appreciated,

Joe Betsy

Please see our FAQ for tips on saving fuel. Beyond that, the answers to your question lie in your owner's manual, or the dealership you bought the car from.

Thank you. I've tried the official routes for improving fuel economy to no avail. The 2023 used CR-V on the dealers lot averaged 36mpg over the 45,000 miles driven by the previous owner. Without the lower new car financing at 3.9%, the fact that my 2016 Rogue trade in had only 40,000 miles driven by me and my wife, left me with the same down payment and a little higher monthly loan payment. My only other hybrid was a KIA Niro, which my wife did not like as much as the Rogue, trading it in on my Ridgeline. The Niro had stellar gas mileage.

I too have been extremely disappointed with the gas mileage on my 2024 CRV sport hybrid. I have had it since November and the best I have gotten was 30mpg. Just went on a 3hr trip yesterday of highway driving and got a sad 23.6mpg. It was cold (live in PA), but so far very disappointed. They should put an asterisk next to "Average fuel economy".

don't forget that ethanol in the fuel makes a noticeable difference. Fill it up with some non-ethanol fuel, go on the highway, and you'll notice the number jump. Same thing with winter blend fuel.

What is your driving habits like? What percentage city? What percentage highway? Lots of fast accelerations?

I continue to drive like the cheap bastard that I have become.  I figured my short trips would be the hybrid's improvement of fuel consumption, as it was on my KIA Niro, which hovered around 50mpg year round.  I do appreciate that the CR-V, unlike the Niro, is not passed by wheelchair and walker dependent folk while going uphill on a steep grade.  I have only found one other review of the identical model, who reset their trip meter showing a raise in economy to 41mpg, from the four day ownership result of 36mpg, while using their CR-V for mostly highway driving.  I've tried sport mode while shutting off the economy driving mode, as suggested by the dealer where I purchased it and for the first time we hit 31mpg. briefly.  I've reset the meter to see if it can maintain an average of 30mpg like my 2016 Rogue trade in with a 2.5 liter in line 4 cylinder.

I mistakenly said sport mode instead of the normal driving mode that was recommended and now in.
